and devastation. The riots ignited after the trials verdict was announced, sending a strong message to white supremacists everywhere that racial intolerance was not to be warranted. The
chain of events the occurred from the initial Los Angeles rioting caused scattered riots to ignite in several other states, including Las Vegas, Nevada. When one assesses the value
of these riots as it relates to the trials aftermath, one can easily surmise that the Los Angeles Police Department was struggling to overcome a reputation of racism when the
beating took place; at this point, however, it had all but sealed its fate for ever being able to overcome the hatred that the riots clearly represented. "Los Angeles
still lives with the scars of the worst uprising in this country since the Civil War. The charred debris from the fires has now been cleared, but many empty
lots remain; bare, upright, exterior walls still standing, constant reminders of the days of fury. Fifty three people died in the violence, over six hundred buildings were destroyed by
fire and the damage to the city was over one billion dollars. It will take a long time for the heart and spirit of Los Angeles to recover" (Riot
Aftermath). Society has been struggling to "overcome centuries of racism, racial conflicts and racial polarization" (The Formation of a Multi-Racial Society).
There is virtually no segment of society that is not affected by racial stereotypes. From school children to the workplace, from the entertainment industry to the sports world, white
