other airline personnel were instructed to be rather passive during a hijacking. In general, it was thought that all hijackers would want would be to go to another venue and
so, it would be in the best interests of the crew and passengers if staff would not try to act heroic. After all, the plane is in the air and
anything can happen. Therefore, it makes sense to do as asked when someone on board has a knife or gun and is making threats. That did make sense prior to
September 11, 2001. What ensued on that fateful day was actually something unanticipated. Suicide pilots boarded four planes which would ultimately crash into the world trade towers, the Pentagon and
then a field in Pennsylvania. That last flight was the one where there was a demonstration of a changing attitude. After the two planes plunged into the World Trade Center
towers, controllers sent a text message to all United Airlines aircraft that told them to beware of cockpit intrusion ("Transcript," 2001). It was taken seriously. The pilot of
one United Airlines Flight 93 apparently replied in text, saying "confirmed " (2001). So when it was learned that the message was sent and received and that it crashed in
field and not into a building as the other flights had, it was surmised that perhaps the people on board fought back. Later evidence would come forth as people called
