    companies, however, run multiple systems - they run multiple warehouse systems through acquisitions or decentralization (Levinson, 2002). Then there are the departments within a corporation, all running off their own  computer systems. Enterprise Resource Planning is the ingredient to help unify systems and to make departments and units work more in tandem. But  is ERP effective? Or is this simply another "business fad" that is doomed to failure? This paper will attempt to answer this question, first by defining what ERP is, and  then by providing examples of companies that have used the process, both for good and for bad. The conclusion well reach is that  ERP is neither effective nor ineffective as it is primarily a software. What needs to be measured is the business processes surrounding the concept. What is ERP?  The original terminology, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), was launched in the 1990s by the Gartner Group, one of the most well-known technological consultants (Mohamed, 2002). And  despite the bumpy road this concept has had, more companies are beginning to implement the concept in order to better centralize information in one source, and then make it available  to all units and departments (Montagnon, 2002). These days, the goal of ERP is to bring together all departments, functions and networks  in a company onto a single computer system that serves the particular needs of all these departments, functions and networks (Koch, 2002). While the practice seems simple in theory, in  reality, its a complex task (Koch, 2002). Its hard building one software system that can serve needs of people in finance as well as in human resources, inventory control or
