    cuts her hair (Discrimination in Raisin in the Sun). She goes from having long, straight hair to having an afro (Discrimination in Raisin in the Sun). Clearly this  shows how she is trying to connect to her African roots and trying very hard to assert her own independence (Discrimination in Raisin in the Sun). Beneathas  cutting of her hair is a very powerful social statement, as she symbolically declares that natural is beautiful, prefiguring the 1960s cultural credo that black is beautiful. Rather than force  her hair to conform to the style society dictates, Beneatha opts for a style that enables her to more easily reconcile her identity and her culture. Beneathas new hair is  a symbol of her anti-assimilationist beliefs as well as her desire to shape her identity by looking back to her roots in Africa (Discrimination in Raisin in the Sun).  It is Beneathas dream to become a doctor (Raisin in the Sun). It is Walters dream to own his own business.  Walter is much more restless than his sister, and as time passes he becomes so frustrated that he ends up hanging out in bars all of the time.  This is his attempt at asserting himself and struggling to find his own way. Clearly he is trying to gain his independence but the truth is that he is  still very much connected to his family and he is very concerned for them. The Role of Lena Younger The  role of Lena Younger is indeed an amazing one. Here is a woman who has had so little happiness in her life and yet it is her family that
