Andrew Crumeys  second novel of 18th century place and characters will challenge you to re-evaluate everything you ever learned about the literary form called "novel." "A Literary Escher" The Machester Guardian coned  this phrase for Andrew Crumeys second novel, pfitz (1997). If enjoy the work of artist M.C. Escher, you will grab up this book and run for the  most comfortable chair you own. Like Escher, you will either love this work or hate it. Many of Eschers graphics appear flat, until you look at them closely,  then you will see the positive and negative spaces juxtaposed next to each other until, you ask yourself which one of these is real - what am I looking at.  How is the artistic painting directive of , "light goes back and dark comes forward, " to develop three dimensional perspective skewed? Crumey has done with words, and  fanciful conceits, the same thing that Escher has done with line and image. Interestingly enough, the comparison doesnt stop there: both "artists" were trained in the sciences -  Crumey in physics and Escher in mathematics. And for those in the "real" world, it is often physics and mathematics that give real boundaries to the world. pfitz In  the beginning of our story "pfitz" is both the title of the work, and a major character.
