    maternal mortality in a developed and a developing country. Using national reports from the UK and South Africa the aim of the report is to make a direct comparison and  assess the reasons for differentials between the developed and the developing countries. Mantel and Moodley argue that the level of the maternal mortality rate is a reflection of the  general healthcare standards, and that in developing countries maternal issues are often overlook for more visible health issues, By taking a developing country and undertaking a direct comparison with a  developed county there is a very useful framework from which useful lessons may be learnt in order to improve facilities in many areas. The methodology takes two national reports  and examined them in line with a framework that was developed to assess maternal care under the "Safe Motherhood Initiative". The first report used is from South Africa, this  was the first national report published by the government that had been prepared on the subject covering maternal deaths in 1998, both the main report published in 1999 and the  preliminary report published in 1998 are utilised. The second report was for the period between 1994 and 1996 covering the whole of the UK (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland).  This was published by the government in 1998. To make a comparison between the two reports the framework that was developed for Safe Motherhood Initiative, which was launched in Kenya  has been used. This framework, initially launched in 1987 is an analytical model to examine the causes and influenced on the factors that result in maternal mortality. The aim of  the framework was to identify areas where programs could reduce the rate of maternal mortality. The framework looks at number of factors, these include the level of the different
