    females and girls. Those studies that are available support the theory that risk factors for girls are very different than they are for boys. The study these authors are  summarizing was a longitudinal study, one entitled the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods. The purpose is to study the contexts within which delinquency develops in adolescents. Part of  that study focuses specifically on adolescent girls between the ages of 12 and 15. This study is different than many others because it includes the context of the community and  not just the family. This is a quantitative empirical correlation study. In other words, the researchers are investigating the correlations between numerous factors and criminal/delinquent acts committed by adolescent  girls in a multiracial community. The investigators explored the risks that have been associated with adolescent delinquency, the question being, what forces may act to predispose adolescents to becoming  involved in delinquent or criminal acts? Researchers looked at "dimensions of risk" (Obeidallah and Earls, 1999, p. 1) to determine what might make a girl vulnerable to antisocial behaviors.  One aspect that is known about adolescent delinquency is the role depression plays. Depression is known to be more prevalent in adolescent girls than in boys, thus, the researchers theorized  that depression may be a risk factor. Depression causes many different feelings and conditions such as the inability to concentrate, sleep disturbance, low self-concept, feelings of worthlessness and thoughts of  suicide, among others. Researchers suggested three ways in which depression could act as a predisposer to delinquency: girls may become indifferent regarding their own health and safety, depressed girls  may be rejected by peers and turn to anyone or any group where they can be validated, and depressed youngsters may withdraw from prosocial activities.
