    Robert Owen through to the ideas of theorists such as Mayo and Maslow, there has been a high level of support for the concept of social man as an approach  to define employment human resources policies to maximise employees positive behavioural traits, such as productivity and loyalty (Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007). These are models of the human relations school of  thought, the where motivation is linked to emotional and social needs of employees indicating where the employment relationship is positive and employees feel that they are important to the  employer, with their needs as well as commercial needs met. However, despite the large amount of evidence supporting this approach the opposite approach, of economic man as seen in practices  associated with scientific management techniques are still seen, found not only in areas of manufacture, but in many other areas such as the fast food industry and in call centres.  In many of these industries despite the association with negative behavioural traits, the level of performance is above that expected, employees may be motivated and the negative aspects of scientific  management are absent. This means that there remain some elements of the relationship between motivation level and workplace performance remains under examined and explained. For employers that have operations within  the scientific management paradigm where there are often operations that require cost effective strategies the aspect of motivation remains important, so understanding the concepts and how the relationship between motivation  and performance emergences within these scenarios. 1.1 Research Question The research question is what is the relationship between motivation and impact of motivation strategies found in modern scientific management  environments, such as call centers, and the level of employee performance?
