    Number of Pages: 10

    Summary of the research paper:

A 10 page discussion of the genetic and environmental correlations of asthma. This paper presents a study designed to educate genetically at-risk families in Harlem NY and to track those families over time to assess program benefits. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Its impacts can be ravaging. Recent research, however, suggests that asthma does have certain genetic predictors. The intent of this paper is to explore  those predictors and to present a research proposal designed to more further test their applicability in populations yet thoroughly explored by other researchers. This research will be particularly advantageous because  one of the most effective interventions for curbing pediatric asthma in particular is educating patients and families on the disease and the preventative mechanisms and treatments which can be employed  to abate it. By genetically identifying those genetically at risk for this disease, medical personnel have the potential to greatly reduce the number of individuals that actually succumb to  the condition. Asthma is a restrictive airway disease. Those afflicted with the condition periodically experience a reduction in the ability  to breath freely. These symptoms are referred to as reversible airway obstruction. Asthma patients also experience discomfort in their chests as well as wheezing and coughing.  The physiological reasons for these responses include spasms in the smooth muscle tissue surround the airway as well as increased secretions and significant swelling around the airways  Asthma affects an estimated sixteen million individuals in the U.S. alone and countless others around the world (Couzin 185). Even in the best-managed cases,  asthma can result in frequent hospitalizations and a number of medical considerations both inside and outside the clinical environment. Asthma that affects young children is particularly concerning because of
