This time, and perhaps sound, was primarily due to the ingenious vision of Berry Gordy, the man who started Motown and brought  more than automobiles to the city of Detroit. As we shall see, Gordy was a man who came from a family that worked for themselves, being businessmen. Gordy was also  a man who obviously had an ear for artists, as he was an artist himself. He was a man with a vision, a vision that perhaps grew slowly, and a  man who seemed to be in the right place at the right time, possessing the right capabilities. Bearing these realities in mind we present the following paper which presents an  overview of Gordys life and his involvement in Motown. The paper then presents a more in-depth examination of what Gordy was and what he did to the city of Detroit  as it relates to Motown. Berry Gordy and Motown "The Motown story is the story of Berry Gordy, Jr., who was born in Detroit Michigan on November 28,  1929, he was the seventh of eight children of Berry, Sr. and Bertha Gordy. His parents had migrated to Detroit from Milledgeville, Georgia in 1922" (Edwards; Callahan, 1999; gordystory.html). "The  Gordys an ambitious middle-class family with roots in Georgia farming and retailing" (Anonymous Berry Gordys Motown Records, 2002; motown_records.htm). Berrys father "ran a plastering contracting business and his mother sold  insurance and real estate; they also ran a grocery store and print shop. Berry Gordy, Jr. dropped out of school after his junior year to become a professional boxer; he  decided to get out of the fight game at about the time the Army drafted him in 1951" (Edwards; Callahan, 1999; gordystory.html).
