Betty Friedan, bell hooks and Alice Walker are but three of numerous printed voices who have played  an integral role in significantly impacting positive change amidst an otherwise racially ruled society. Alice Walkers Anything We Love Can Be Saved : A Writers Activism eloquently chronicles the authors  personal interpretation of the world around her. Borrowing inspiration from such literary and historical personalities as Zora Neale Hurston and Winnie Mandela, Walker steps into a position of power  in order to relate how the essence of power has transcended racial inequity throughout the decades. Says the author: "My activism--cultural, political, spiritual--is rooted in my love of nature  and my delight in human beings" (Walker PG). Powerful women are a rare breed. Such rarity is clearly depicted in two particularly  outstanding stories within the literary boundaries of Walkers Anything We Love Can Be Saved : A Writers Activism: 1) How Long Shall They Torture Their Mothers: The Trials of Winnie  Mandela and 2) You Have All Seen: If The Women Of The World Were Comfortable, This Would Be A Comfortable World. While each womans strength is varied among these  tales, they share a common thread of power felt from down within ones very being. It is with this strength and power that these women are able to cope  with extreme situations and make their lives more worthwhile. Conspicuously absent in these two stories is the weak and fragile persona; instead, Walkers  accounts represent what is fashioned after ones burning desire for self-preservation. Walkers treatment of Mandela and Hurstons stories is a prime example of how such yearning can turn something
