Bryan Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., April 2001 Introduction This discussion will center on the psychological changes that are represented by the  Kurt Vonnegut character, Billy Pilgrim in the 1968 novel, SlaughterHouse Five. The parts of the character and the novel are mixed together as much as the turmoil of one  war, and the memories of another. This is the story of an author remembering his youthful prisoner of war experiences during the horrific bombing of Dresden. The  city was of no strategic importance, but the Allies continued to bomb it - perhaps simply because they could. The firestorm that consumed the city, also ate 135,  000 souls. Partnering with Opposites Throughout the novel there are many "partnerings" with opposites. If an image repeats itself, it is almost a clue to look for its mirror  or opposite image. An example is the full title of the story itself: Slaughterhouse-Five or The Childrens Crusade: A Duty Dance with Death. The "slaughterhouse" was really that,  a place in the old city of Dresden, where the animal was butchered and stored beneath the cool and quiet earth - a meat tomb. This time however the
