    a thing of the past. In todays fast-paced world, people are less willing to stand in long lines at Blockbuster or Movie Gallery. Enter the rise of online movie rentals  from companies such as Netflix." In fact, Blockbusters around the nation are closing their doors. During the beginning of 2006, 164 stores closed due to the fierce competition for  video rentals (Hansel, 2006). In fact, there are now even rental machines in supermarkets and pay per view services as well as the online market. All of this has created  problems for the physical Blockbuster locales. Netflix has taken some of Blockbusters market share and Blockbuster has entered the fray. In respect to the online service, the CEO reports:  " As you know, when we launched our online service in August of 2004, we had terrific growth for the first 12 months. We were then forced to shut down  our marketing spending in the later half of 2005. As a result, consumer awareness of our service dropped, and we lost momentum. We only began advertising again in February of  this year. But still, during the first quarter of 06, spent only about half as much as we did during the same period last year. But the good news is,  we havent been sitting idle" ("Blockbuster Q1 2006," 2006). It seems that Blockbuster is facing steep competition and this year may be a turning point for the relatively successful company.  All firms face challenges. In order to fully evaluate any firm in terms of positive and negative issues they face, a SWOT analysis is in order.
