When war is considered it is comfortable to think that in the modern world war is something that only  happens in far flung places where society and communications have not developed to as complex a level, however, in the last decade of the twentieth century a war was to  occur which would bring home to those watching that it was not isolated to the less well developed parts of the world, as Bosnia was part of Europe, and for  yet another time there was to be a war in Europe complete with ethnic cleansing and massacre. The difference this time was that the world would be more aware of  the war due to the increased level of media coverage, and the existence of the United Nations would make a difference, in the later years although its role in the  area was controversial due to its late intervention. Yugoslavia has had a chequered history, with the constitution of 1989 being set up after  World War Two. The regime was communist in nature, and instead of looking forward politically it more resembled a revival of previous communist ideologies (Sowards, 1996).
