aspects of "curriculum, instruction, and assessment," but also discusses classroom organization and management practices as well. While Brophy emphasizes learning outcomes, he does so with keeping the need in mind  for a supportive classroom environment. Brophy then goes on to outline the fundamental principles that provide the foundation for his observations. `First of all, Brophy holds that no one  teaching method can be ideal for all purposes and that an optimal teaching will encompass a variety of instructional methods (4). Secondly, he feels that students instructional requirements will evolve  as their own expertise develops. Therefore, what makes up an ideal mixture of instructional methods and learning activities will likewise evolve over the course of "school years, instructional units, and  even individual lessons progress" (4). Brophys third foundation principle is that students should learn at "high levels of mastery" yet also progress steadily through designated curriculum materials (4). At  this point in his booklet, Brophy begins to outline twelve topics that pertain to teaching. First he addresses research results in this area, and then discusses practical classroom applications. In  his conclusion, however, Brophy points out that these twelve principles are not meant to be used in classroom practice individually, but rather in conjunction with each other (14). They are  meant to be "understood as mutually supportive components of a coherent approach to teaching" (14). As this suggests, what emerges from Brophys discussion is a vision of teaching that is  designed not simply to have students master certain skills or memorize individual bits of information, but rather Brophy presents a concept of teaching equips students with the skills they need  to learn anything-- throughout their lives. Supportive classroom climate--The teacher sets the emotional climate for the classroom by modeling positive attributes such as cheerfulness, emotional maturity, sincerity and caring
