For instance, breastfeeding generally suppresses the  process of ovulation, which naturally delays the birth of the next child until after the first has been weaned. Therefore, in quite a few societies, children were not weaned until  between the ages of three and five (162). Breastfeeding has decreased over the last half century because of patterns of consumption, as advertising has promoted the sale of powdered infant  formula (163).
