    the US, ahs been the increase in the number of mothers with young children who return to the workforce (Gornick and Meyers, 2001). In the US, roughly 85 percent of  all mothers who were employed before giving birth, return to their jobs before their childs first birthday (Gornick and Meyers, 2001). While mothers are still culturally expected to bear  the brunt of raising children, they are frequently also having to face the cultural expectation, and the necessity, that all adults should be working in the marketplace, which leaves the  question, as Gornick and Meyers (2001) put it: "who is caring for the children?" As the following examination of this issue will demonstrate, this issue is crucial to the  fabric of society, which depends on the successful nurturing of the next generation. Background information Imagine being in this predicament: Nakia Burgess had already lost two jobs, working as a  transcriber in Atlanta, Georgia because of her inability to secure affordable child care for her three-year-old daughter, Asante, who was born with Down syndrome (Mencimer, 2002). Therefore, when the temporary  employment agency called her offing a position, Burgess, a single parent, was determined to keep the job. On the second day of employment, Burguess child care arrangement fell through. She  felt she had no option but to take Asante with her. She left the child in the car and planned to come out periodically and check on her. After just  90 minutes, the Asante was unconscious from the heat. By the time, Asante reached the hospital, she was pronounced dead (Mencimer, 2002). Burgess was charged with murder, but  the charges were reduced when thousands of working parents spoke out in her defense. While the media treated this as a freak occurrence, the sad truth is that it is
