While mothers are still culturally expected to bear  the brunt of raising children, they are frequently also having to face the cultural expectation, and the necessity, that all adults should be working in the marketplace, which leaves the  question, as Gornick and Meyers (2001) put it: "who is caring for the children?" As the following examination of this issue will demonstrate, this issue is crucial to the  fabric of society, which depends on the successful nurturing of the next generation.
