EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND In seeking a career as a network administrator, it is usually helpful to have had experience as a system administrator. At the very  least it will require a four-year degree, although some companies will accept an Associate in Science degree with a certification. Certification with Novell or Microsoft is preferable and can  oftentimes "substitute for a year of experience" (Parkland 2002, PG). By proving your prowess at technical skills it is useful to have completed the Novell, Microsoft or Cisco requirements testing.  This will prove that one has the necessary analytical skills that it takes to be a network administrator. The more certifications one has the more valuable you look  on your resume. Some of the certifications that are available area as follows: * Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) * Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) * Cisco Certified  Networking Associate (CCNA) * Certified Novell Administrator (CNA) * Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) (Bay Area Colleges 2002, PG). WHAT THE JOB INVOLVES Network administrators have many typical  functions, all of which are important to the computer users. It is usually necessary for the network administrators to wear a beeper so that they can be reached at  any time in the case part of the system is not working. Most of what comprises the job of the network administrator is ensuring the e-mail, both incoming and  outgoing is working, that the printers are interfacing correctly with the computers, adding and deleting users from the network list and ensuring that the computers are communicating with each other.
