By - June, 2012 properly! The case study instructional methodology (CSIM) provides
an ideal methodology that can be applied effectively whenever a situation or topic requires comprehensive, in-depth investigation (Tellis, 1997). Case study research facilitates understanding social phenomena and behavior in regards
to individuals or groups and, therefore, has been used extensively within the realms of sociology, psychological, social work, business education, as well as other fields of study (Yin, 2009). This
instructional method provides students studying a particular social or behavioral phenomena an ideal means for gaining insight on the topic of study because it incorporates the perspectives of the people
who experience that phenomena. The history of case study research offers a wide array of approaches and examples of topics that CSIM has been used to investigate. For instance,
William F. Whytes classic 1943 study street life in East Boston utilized an ethnographic approach, as did Stacks study of black ghetto families in 1974 (Orum, Feagin and Sjoberg, 1991).
Case studies may also utilize individual biographies in order to explore social behaviors. Examples of this use of CSIM are Andersons 1923 study of the life histories of hoboes, Rollins
1985 study of black domestics and Feagins 1991 study of middle-class blacks (Orum, Feagin and Sjoberg, 1991). Another use of CSIM pertains to studies that examine the "social history of
a social group or collectivity" (Orum, Feagin and Sjoberg, 1991, p. 5). Learner characteristics relevant for CSIM are to achieve a thorough knowledge of what this research approach entails,
