    a masters degree online and her father works regular office hours. Sophias grandmother comes over on average once a day, providing Sophias mother with a break, as she takes the  child for a walk. Sophias mother speaks only German to her, but the parents use English when talking to each other and the father also uses English when he talks  to Sophia. The following observation and interview took place at their home and the majority of the observation took place in the family room of their house, which has  an open plan. Part 1: Child observation The observation began with Sophia sitting on her mothers lap. She looked a little frightened of me at first, but curiosity soon overcame  this apprehension and she soon squirmed off her mothers lap and started crawling toward me. During the journey between her mother and me, she kept glancing toward her mother to  see if she approved. Once she reached me, she pulled herself up, using my legs, and indicated that she wanted me to pick her up. She was happy for a  moment and then started to cry, clearly indicating that she wanted to get down. I placed her on the floor and she crawled back to her mother. This behavior  is perfectly in keeping with the normal physical and cognitive development for Sophias age. The way that Sophia kept glancing back at her mother while she journeyed towards me is  particularly characteristic, as babies at this age will begin exploring their world, but like to stay within the vicinity of their mothers who constitute a safe home-base for this activity.  Sophias physical development is also precisely on schedule. She crawls well and is able to pulling herself to a standing position by holding onto something. After she recovered from
