Isolation, privation and loss in childhood are major themes in literature. This report discusses the work of two Canadians, Joy Kogawa's Obasan and Margaret Laurence's The Stone Angel. Both are young girls growing up without mothers. Included are issues of growth and reconciliation.This paper has five pages and two sources are listed in the bibliography. .
