Cindy began to cry, Billys mother ran into the room asking what had happened. "I just wanted to read, Mommy," he answered in a most innocent tone. "Thats  not true," Cindy hollered, as she rubbed her sore arm. "I was reading and he walked up and just grabbed it from me. And then he punched me."  Billys mother took him by the hand and led him into his room. After she closed the door behind them, she sat down on the bed and asked  why he did what he did to Cindy. Clearly, Billys ability to communicate his desire to read was jumbled up in aggression and a low sense of self, which  his mother quickly addressed by working closely with him in order to develop better communication habits. There are a number of variables that  are pertinent to an individuals sense of self and communication with others, many of which are evident in the first twenty minutes of the movie Forrest Gump. Attaining a  healthy self-perception is arguably one of the most difficult and ongoing of life tasks, in that it depends not only upon intrinsic sources but also external environmental stimulation. Forrests  momma clearly understood the importance of this as it related to her slow son, knowing that if she did not instill a healthy dose of self into him from the  very beginning, he would face a life full of ridicule and social torment. From parental methods to school to social interaction, the extent to which children from infancy through  late childhood develop self-esteem encompasses several elements. However, one might readily surmise that family plays one of the most integral roles in this development.
