When evaluating drill presses, one wants to look for quality and while some brand names command attention in looking at reviews on such implements, one may just find that the  lower priced ones have more features and are easier to use. First a look at the most expensive of the three--and the one that has the most recognizable brand name--will  provide necessary information about this important tool. The Craftsman 17" 22917 uses 12 amps at 115 volts, and has a 16 speed range that begins at a low rate  of 200 rpm and goes all the way up to 3,630 rpm (Self, 1999). The changeover in respect to speed election is easy and there is a standard lever and  knob set up that one can twist and unlock; this allows the motor to easily slide forward (1999). In part, ease of use should go into the equation when evaluating  tools. All Craftsman drill presses come with a sheet steel fence, something that is rather simple to assemble and very useful to boot (1999). Rack and pinion table elevation  does save a lot of work especially if one is wondering whether or not they are close enough (1999). This Craftsman model has a built in  light socket, a switch, and the depth stop which is American shaft and nut style, something that allows for greatest efficacy (Self, 1999). The overall fit and finish are  rather good, but the runout is quite low at 00175" (1999). The author says: " Thats as good as it gets, and it was achieved with no tune-up. To be  perfectly honest, I was amazed and checked it twice" (1999, p.58). The model, that weighs about 187 pounds is priced at about $430 ("Tool," 2001). The Grizzly G7944 drill press
