system or should the newer in vogue system of Client/Server technology be utilised. Each system is different, and there are both advantages and disadvantages in the decision, However, to
make that decision the need to be an examination of the different factors for and against each option. Over time in this industry, as in any others, there will
be fashions and trends reflecting the ideas and developments. In recent years that has been a move away form the more traditional mainframes to the Client/Server technology (Ferris, 1999). This
may be partly due to demand, but it may also be seen as industry led, where the resellers of the equipment hold sway and companies seek advice, as well as
the way in which it is made available. This can be seen as the first indication of an advantage, with greater availability of the component parts of Client/Server system (Dyman,
2002). Yet, this in itself is not a reason to favour one system over another. As Dyman (2002) notes, just because one if favoured currently, does not mean that
the other will disappear, and as such mainframes are still a very valid choice. Therefore, we will look at some of the advantages that mainframes can offer over Client/Server technology.
Some advantages can be seen as universal, whilst other may be more specialist to some situations. For example in some instances ion some circumstances a mainframe may be able
to offer economics of scale, in addition it may have a more effective use of disk space and other I/O (Dyman, 2002). There is also the major feature of centralised
