    This is the macro environment, and this is multidimensional, with economic, legal, social and technological impacts all reflected on the way a company operates. The legal framework may be seen  as interesting, as this will constrain actions, but also pushing the companies in the environment into innovations in order to develop new ways of competing.  If we consider some ways in which the law controls and companies then we can also look at the way that companies may react to this. If  we are considering the UK then there are many examples we may use. However, we can look to a basic law such as The Copyright, Designs and Patents Bill 1988,  which superseded The Copyright Act 1956 (Murphy et al, 1988) may be seen as a protection for companies. Here there is a protection of new developments. However, the protection is  interesting as for a breach to occur the patent, or protected design need to be proven to be used by someone else. Theoretically this may be seen as completely innocent,  as there is no requirement in the law for there to be any knowledge of the existence of the breached patent. Cases  such as British Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd v Armstrong Patents Co Ltd (1986) illustrated the way in which the older statute had become very outdated (McFarlane, 1986). The purpose of  this update was primarily to bring copyright protection in line with the developments over the preceding years, for example the increased use of computers and intellectual property (McFarlane, 1986).  The spirit and general purpose of the act still remained the same. With these new developments a new aspect was also introduced into
