some intense debate in the past few weeks over whether the town should grant a variance that would allow Wal-Mart to build a new store on the edge of town.  Some argue that Wal-Mart will come in here, undercut all the local merchants, put some of them out of business and then raise prices as it has in other  areas (Quinn, 2000). That could be what indeed does happen here with a Wal-Mart. But if that happens, the fault wont lie with Wal-Mart - it will lie  with stale businesses that fail to keep up. Many small retailers have used entry of Wal-Mart into their towns as the best reason available to do things differently. The  Small Things How many retailers do we have here that open for business before 10 am or stay open past 5 or 6  pm? Quite a few even close at 3 and 4 pm on Saturdays, are closed on Sundays. They are among the first to complain about business being bad,  yet except for a few hours on Saturday they refuse to keep their stores open at times that most working people - the ones with regular paychecks and money to  spend - are on the job. These stores with limited hours open after working people get to work and close before they get off for the day. What  are working people supposed to do? Well, well shop at Wal-Mart. For now, we run out at lunch time or try to  fit yet one more thing into an already too-full Saturday. Thats the only day we have to clean the house, mow the yard and get the laundry done around
