    The concept of the department store first evolved in Great Britain in the mid 1800s. It was a concept which would change the nature of the way business  was done in British society, and eventually in societies around the world. Indeed, as Tamilia (2002) observes, the advent of the department store in the middle part of the  nineteenth century could be hailed as a major revolution, the waves of which continue to be felt into the present day. Numerous factors have contributed to the rise  of this new retailing adventure. Among these factor are changing land use patterns, changing occupations of the citys residents, changing income levels, and even such issues as crime, racial  conflicts, and the types of transportation which are available and in predominant use. Important as well was the changing perceptions of people as to what constituted their shopping needs.  The concept of the department store changed the way goods were delivered from their point of manufacture to the customer. It impacted  such aspects of the retail experience as how people shopped, the concept and policy of credit, advertising techniques and a variety of other retail considerations. This revolution was not  limited to retailing considerations alone, however, but extended all the way to acting as an agent of change in a wide gamut of managerial issues and even technological innovations.  Changes came about in such aspects as hiring, gender equality in the workplace, inventory procedures, etc. Indeed, the advent of the department store changed the way Great Britain did  business in a number of diverse ways.
