not necessarily the case, for example, if we consider diethyl ether, a member of the ether functional group, although still only used in very limited situations as an anaesthesia, it  has been superseded by many other compounds that are both more potent in their effect as well as producing less severe and fewer side effects  Within organic chemistry the functional groups can be placed into wider families, the ether functional group is a part of the Oxygen-containing functional groups. These include the alcohols,  aldehydes, ketones and the carboxylic acids and others, they are groups where there is a link between the oxygen and the carbvon molecules (Plambeck, 1996).  Here we use the idea of oxidation as a convenient manner of dealing with these types of groups, but it should be noted this is a divergent  manner with the way that non-organic compounds (Plambeck, 1996). In this classification here is consideration of the state that the oxidation of the carbon is in, to which the  oxygen molecule is attached (Plambeck, 1996). There may also be other carbon molecules, but these are ignored in this classification (Plambeck, 1996). The state of the carbon that  is used is worked out in the traditional manner, for example the state of oxygen is calculated as -2, and hydrogen has an oxidation state of +1 (Plambeck, 1996).  If we wish to place the functional group of ethers in context then we can look at the family as a whole; Table: Oxidation States of Oxygen-Containing Functional Groups (Plambeck,  1996). Compound Class Name Oxidation State CO2 carbon dioxide +4 RCOOH
