While HIV is still considered something to be ashamed or afraid of in many places, at the same time there are those that  need to be aware that one is a carrier of HIV. This remains a hotly contested debate for many reasons. HIV/AIDS: TO TELL OR NOT TO TELL Despite  studies that report AIDS-related deaths are on the decline, there has been -- and will continue to be -- a tremendous burden upon the general public with regard to general  health issues and all associated with it. A disease so wicked that its consequences even affect those who are not afflicted with it, AIDS has placed a huge price  tag on society that influences the health status and care of every single person, regardless of their age, gender or social status. The student will want to note that  "After considering such factors as the type of neighborhood, sex, age, ethnicity, site of AIDS diagnosis, time period of AIDS diagnosis, researchers found no association between socioeconomic status and  length of survival" (Katz et al, 1998, p. 282). The student should stress that whether one has AIDS or not, the impact of this disease is on all of  society. SOCIETAL MISUNDERSTANDING It is extremely unfortunate the effect AIDS has on the individuals afflicted with the disease, as well as  on society as a whole. As the student should explain, many believe those responsible for their own life choices should also be responsible for the consequences that go along  with them, and do not feel they should have to foot the bill in any way. It is a difficult dilemma, to be sure, and one that will likely
