SA149div.rtf There are different ways  to look at diversity hiring. One is to say that all people are alike and that one should hire with blinders on in respect to color and national original. People  are people and should not be treated any differently. But there is another way to look at hiring. While the idea that everyone is equal is a nice sentiment, the  truth is that many people are not hired due to prejudice and so, to some extent, diversity hiring programs and affirmative action are measures taken to ensure that people of  different backgrounds are hired. While that is true, there are other reasons companies may want to hire people of different backgrounds. By doing so, the companies will benefit,  and this is particularly true in some industries. In certain industries-particularly the travel industry-people of different backgrounds can be helpful in making reservations and speaking to staff in other  locations. With diversity sometimes comes people who speak different languages and understand different customs. While that is the case in such industries, there are other reasons for diversity hiring. In  police departments around the nation, there have been accusations of prejudice. One way to alleviate this is to hire minorities. Also, it makes sense to have people in law enforcement  positions who are like the people they police. When officers serve the communities they live in, it is called community policing. Yet, in areas where there is diversity in population,  there should be diversity in the force as well. Yet another industry where diversity becomes important is in the media. There have been a great deal of problems in the
