Simpson was on trial for the double murder of his ex-wife Nicole  and her friend Ron Goldman, the term domestic violence took center stage, as several frantic 911 calls placed by the former Mrs. Simpson which alleged spousal abuse were presented.  However, in truth, domestic violence has been Americas "dirty little secret" for years, and unfortunately, what is required under the law, in terms of response, and what often takes place  in these instances are usually quite different. It is recommended that the student writing about this topic first consider what actually constitutes domestic violence. It is abuse which  takes place in the household, and can take three forms, physical, emotional and child (Domestic Violence and You). Legally speaking, domestic violence encompasses an act in which one person  inflicts physical harm (such as hitting, kicking, slapping or sexual assault), issues threats or uses force upon another which instill fear (such as, "Im going to kill you"), and any  type of physical injury, emotional cruelty or sexual misconduct against a child (Domestic Violence and You). However, in the case of child abuse, that which has been deemed a  bit ambiguously as "discipline administered in a reasonable manner" does not qualify as domestic violence (Domestic Violence and You). Although specific laws regarding domestic violence can vary from  state to state, and city to city, police are required by law in all states to respond to reports of domestic violence, since such acts are in violation of the  law (Domestic Violence and You). Also, police are obligated to respond to domestic violence calls to fulfill their role as citizen protectors. If one persons life is being
