by each successive generation. Why? What is it about this particular poem that has caused it to be quoted and misquoted more often than many contemporary poets? One can say
that it is simply the waft and weave of the cloth, so to speak. It has been said that there are no new ideas under the sun, only new voices
and ways of telling and sharing those ideas. Therefore, the student may very well state that Thomas poem is widely read and has survived long beyond the lifetime of its
creator, simply because it was crafted well and in a way that continues to speak in an unique way to each generation. One of the ways in which Dylan Thomas
crafts this poem is in his use of tone. Tone, itself, the student may wish to add, refers to all the ways in which a poets particular perspective on something
enriches or modifies the meaning of the usual and casual word. Tone can be said to embody the attitude of the poet toward his subject and toward those who he
perceives will read his poetry. Tone, then, can be indicated by the poet in many ways such as certain images, be they dark or light, for example, or from his/her
use of cadences, rhythms, repetitions and events or actions that may take place within the poem. Also, it can be said that tone is not an element that can be
examined by itself because it interrelates with so many of the other elements of poetry such as figures of speech, irony, type of speaker, symbolism and meter. Tone can be
seen in Thomas poem in the first few lines. One can say that as in any good piece of literature, the setting, tone and initial ideas for the piece are
