(Anonymous, no date), arguing how  any success that may come by way of emergent strategies "should be seen for what it is: brilliant improvisation or just plain luck" (de Wit et al, 1998, p. PG)  By contrast, emergent strategies utilize incremental decision making to reach a certain "degree of consistency over time" (Scholl, no date) that serves to set in motion the most opportune  focus for the company to take. The very nature of problem solving and decision making are paramount to emergent strategies. Applying deliberate and emergent strategies to the apparel, automotive  and beverage alcohol industries, the student will want to discuss such companies as Ford Motor Company (deliberate), Honda (emergent), KappAhl (Swedish apparel company - deliberate), Hennes and Mauritz AB (Swedish  apparel company - emergent) and Nigerian Breweries Plc (both emergent and deliberate depending if the beer is established or newly-produced). When discussing the  steps in the rational decision making process as it relates to Kmart recognizing the need to recover from its prolonged poor image & retail sales slump, it is important  to point out that the political nature of decision making often stands in the way of any significant progress.
