There have been times when the need for assistance has been greater or lesser, however, the future holds a definite place for the human service worker able  to incorporate the necessary skilled and knowledge. Times change, people change. The world has changed since the earliest inroads were made in the social service area.  The new reality is one in which multiculturalism and welfare reform mark the wave of the future. The student becoming involved in the study of human services will need  to be aware that not only the theories and models of the past are applicable but that competencies that reflect the needs of the future must be incorporated into the  knowledge and training received. There is a propensity in the modern world to label problems in order to address situations. The relationship between the worker and the  client has at its core the problem solving perspective. "The helping professions may have abandoned the notion that human failings are a result of moral defect, but they seem  to have retained some of the baggage that came along with that notion, particularly the idea that human failure and human problems need be the major focus of helping professionals  work. That idea may now be articulated in a sophisticated professional language with phrases derived from differential diagnosis and complex theory-driven taxonomies of pathological states, but weaknesses, limitations, problems,  and failures remain the filters through which the majority of helping professionals see their clients" (Cohen, 1999, pp. 460). The problems that confront the individual on a day  to day basis are either predictive or postdictive in form.
