useful in examining the company and its existing position. PEST Analysis Political influences are highly relevant within the biotechnology industries in New Zealand. At first glance it appears that  there is a high level of support, for biotechnology industries from the New Zealand government. In response to previous criticisms the government had launched a NZ$100 million venture investment fund  to help fund high technology startups, working with the private sector and other venture capital investors. Further to this additional funding has been announced, with the aim of an injection  of $16.8 million directed at the biotechnology sector to take place between 2003 and 2007. This appears to indicate that there is a high level of this will support for  the biotechnology industry with in New Zealand. Especially when it is considered in the context of other sporting activities, such as the provision of $1.3 million to create an amalgamated  industry body called New Zealand Bio, and the fact that by October 2004 the New Zealand government had invested total $70 million on local biotechnology companies.  The strong connections with Australia are likely to be beneficial, especially as Australia seen as the leading biotechnology country with in the South Pacific region. This  is especially true for firms such as Genesis who have a core strategy of strategic alliances, work with other companies in order to overcome the companies own limitations. However, there  are some specific areas in place that help to make New Zealand a difficult place to undertake biotechnology research due to the high level of regulation which is present within  the country. However, despite the apparent high level of investment, compared to many other countries the actual investment may be seen as relatively constrained.
