    many organisations that directly or indirectly have an impact on how globalisation occurs and to what extent it may be influenced by international laws. The European Union is one of  these organisations that may influence or try to influence the way that development takes place. To understand this we will first consider what we mean by globalisation and also define  what we mean by contentious. Since the 1980s globalisation has been a buzz word in business, it is fashionable and seen by  many as an advantageous environment for a businesses. Globalisation may be seen as the encouragement and the proliferation of companies and culture that transcend national boundaries. Globalisation is the expansion  of the business world from the local and national environment to a world-wide arena. The break down of national boundaries concerning trade have eased the process of globalisation, however the  real key to this modern phenomenon has been the technological advances that have been made over the past fifty years. The globalisation  of trade has now become an integral feature of many national economies. If any country was now to isolate themselves in the global sense it is likely they would suffer  more than they would gain due to the loss of comparative advantages gained from international trade. Consumers have also driven the growth of globalisation forward demanding goods from many countries  not available locally or at lower costs than can be achieved for many items in their home countries. It has been stated, by Joseph Stiglitz, a chief economist, that "Globalisation  is like a giant wave, that can either capsize or carry them forward" (Africa News Service, 1999). This indicates it is something that cannot be resisted, and as such can
