    Summary of the research paper:

A 6 page research paper that addresses the same topic as khhwap.rtf, which is a proposal for a nursing research project designed to address the problem of nosocomial infections in clinical environments. The solution proposed was to design an educational intervention, which would incorporate the latest data pertaining to effective hand hygiene practices. It was further proposed that the efficacy of this intervention would be evaluated via the use of a post-test and also by evaluating the use of hand sanitizer over a subsequent two weeks period. This review of literature describes studies that produced data that support the proposed solution. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

The following review of  literature addresses studies that produced data that supports the proposed solution. Quantitative Research Sandiford, et al (2007) designed a prospective study in order to determine if a convenient located  alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel would have a beneficial effect on nosocomial infection in an acute care surgical unit. Alcohol-based gel dispensers were attached to each bed within a 57-bed acute  surgical unit in Great Britain. Healthcare practitioners, workers and the visiting public were informed of the location of the dispensers and urged to use them. The sample group, however, consisted  of the heath care workers (HCWs) employed within the surgical care unit that was the setting for the study. Out of 70  HCWs, 48 responded to the study questionnaire, which included 14 nurses and 23 doctors. The limited size of this study group is a major limitation. Another limitation is the fact  that the research report does not offer a description of the study instrument, nor does it offer details on the methods of data analysis. However, the results show that the  methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection rate declined from 15.4 to 6.6 per 1000 patients, which led this research team to conclude that the availability of alcohol-based hand sanitizer gels  were shown to have a positive effect on hand hygiene compliance (Sandiford, et al, 2007). Furthermore it supports the use of these gels as cost effective. This study was selected
