If thats the case, then this particular "love triangle" that he has created on the stage (and later on the screen) isnt the typical sloppy sentiment that one normally  associates with the term called "love." Rather, much like Pinters other works, this is a hateful type of love; a love that has been twisted into an opposite of affection,  a jealous, possessive, smothering need rather than a flowery emotional love. This essay will examine Pinters take on relationships through "The Caretaker,"  and how he manages to put truly odd characters together, yet makes it work. The result is an uncomfortable play and a messy conclusion (true Pinteresque), but its right there  with Pinters style - the slice of life plays that have a really odd twist; whether those twists involve the plot, the characters or even the dialogue. In the case  of this particular work, it features all three. The plot of the play itself is fairly simple. It deals with Mick, a  man who is in his late 20s who is, in a sense, loco parentis to his older, 30ish brother Aston. Aston is older, yet he seems and acts younger and  more remote, because he has undergone electric shock therapy because of emotional disturbances and deep depressions. Micks one goal in life is to protect his brother Aston from the outside  world and outside threats, and he does so by placing him in an old house that is far, far away from the normal life. But all of Micks protection and  moves toward isolation cant prevent the intrusion of Mac Davies, an old bum whom Ashton invites into the house as a "caretaker" to look after the house (which, incidentally, is
