Although the company seems to have a strong  history, it has, for the past several years, lost money on its sales, while inventory levels are increasing. This essay will detail what difficulties Harvey Industries has with its current  inventory system and how those difficulties can possibly be corrected. The current inventory system of the company is really not a system,  at least in the standard sense. Certain parts are stocked, and those parts are reordered when supply is low (or even more often, when the parts run out). Reordering is  also not assigned to one specific person. Instead, orders can be made by almost everyone including the stock foreman, the purchasing manager and the manufacturing manager. The problem is, these  three are not necessarily working in the same area at the same time. Although the case study does not say, this can lead to miscommunication - either too much of  one part is ordered, or no parts are ordered, as the assumption is that someone else has done so. Its likely that Harvey Industries has much "dead inventory" in its  warehouse - in other words, inventory that has been ordered but not used during the past year. There is also the difficulty  of inventory actually stored on the shop floor - this inventory includes nuts, bolts, screws and washers. Although these items in and of themselves do not cost much in terms  of dollar volume, if the assembly line is out of them, it can create down time (meaning products dont get to customers when promised).
