Bankrupt three times  before founding Hershey Foods, Milton Hershey found financial success only late in life. He determined to give others greater advantages than he had at the beginning, and today, the  Hershey Trust benefits the Milton Hershey School for disadvantaged children while controlling 77 percent of Hershey (NYSE:HSY) stock (Company Description for HSY, 2004). From the last, desperate effort of  a determined confectioner, Hershey Foods today is a $4 billion company that employs nearly 15,000 people (Company Description for HSY, 2004). Five Forces Analysis  Porters Five Forces (n.d.) model provides a tool for analyzing external conditions and evaluating the industry in which the organization operates. The Porter model assesses rivalry among existing  firms; threat of new entrants; bargaining power of buyers; bargaining power of suppliers; and threat of substitute products in gauging the state of the industry.  Rivalry among existing firms. There is intense rivalry between existing firms. Leading competitors tend to focus on different aspects of their markets, however. Hersheys fortunes  tend to be attached to Hershey Kisses(r), chocolate bars and peanut butter cups, while Cadbury-Schweppes concentrates on filled confections and Nestl? pursues other aspects of the market. Though rivalry  is intense overall, competitors typically do not take each other on head-to-head. Mars Corporation supplies M&Ms to the market, while Hershey limits itself to a variety of Hershey Kisses(r)  and a variety of Hershey Bites(r) forms of its most popular filled products such as York Mints(r).
