It is estimated that by 2007 70% of households were owner occupied 12% were rented from the private sector and the remaining were some  for of social housing (House, 2007). This may be seen as the result of many years of policies supporting social values which involve the goal of home ownership. Different polices  supporting this apache in the UK has included period where tax relief was given on the interest of mortgage payments through the MIRAS1 scheme in the 1970s and 1980s and  the lunch of the right to buy for council house tenants who were given discounted prices ion their homes, with discounts increasing in line with the pried of time the  tenant had been renting from their councils. These both helped to increase home ownership significantly. However, these patterns are not seen only in the UK, similar patterns encouraging ownership have  bee seen in other areas, such as tax incentive savings schemes for first time buyers in Canada (Engelhardt, 1994). However, the rise and preference for home ownership is likely to  be indicative of more than just social policies, and ironically as the demand for homes has increased in line with supply and demand the process for the homes on the  market has also increased and constrained the buyers in terms of affordability (Nellis and Parker, 2006). When looking at the motivations and the barriers to home ownership it is  the underlying desire and motivation that needs to be considered. Saunders (1990, quoted Gurney, 1999), argued that there was a strong association between homeownership and personal feelings of pride and  warmth, as well as personal autonomy when compared to the alternative of renting. However, this is research that has been highly criticized, as the tenure specific meanings of homeownership is
