Like  you might have a sister, or a daughter, or a friend who is a girl? There still are some girls out there, you know. According to Myra  and David Sadker (1994), "When girls do not see themselves in the pages of textbooks, when teachers do not point out or confront the omissions," these same girls, and even  the ones that some of us may know, " learn that to be female is to be an absent partner in the development of our nation. And when teachers add  their stereotypes to the curriculum bias in books, the message becomes even more damaging" (505). I see you shaking your head, and even thinking no -were "done," with that.  The sad reality is that we are not, some of the overt gender bias may have changed but it is alive and well in most schools, and unfortunately unless we  are trained - and know how to watch for the more subtle forms of discrimination that it may occur - we will likely miss it, but our girls wont.
