providing SWOT analyses of Human Resources and of Information Systems at this old
motorcycle manufacturer. The company is nearly 100 years old and suffered many of the
same difficulties that other American manufacturers faced in the 1980s. It has redesigned
itself, and views employees as valuable assets. The management structure is such that there
are very few permanent leaders. Leadership responsibilities cycle among employees
according to the "circle" division in which the employee works. Harley-Davidson was not
an early entrant into all the power it could gain from IT, but it has now taken advantage of
many of the benefits of IT without the need to repeat the early mistakes of others.
