In order  to investigate the reasons why Britain has taken such a significant and leading role in the deployment of the International Security Assistance Force to Afghanistan, it is useful to consider  the role which Britain has already played in the battle against international terrorism which has escalated since the events of September 11th. For example, Britain was the first and most  vociferous nation to lend its support to the USA after the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, and the Prime Minister made it clear that not only would Britain  be heavily involved in the tracking down of international terrorists, including Al-Qaeda, the country would also expect to play a significant part in the overthrow of the Taliban government once  it became clear that bin Laden was directly involved in the attacks on the USA.  As was asserted by a number of British politicians at the time, this was not solely a reaction intended to  demonstrate support for the USA, it was also an acknowledgement that the al-Qaeda network was operating in Europe and that the fight against terrorism was not something which only concerned  the USA and Afghanistan. This perspective was confirmed when terrorist cells were discovered to be active in a number of European countries, including Britain, and evidence of financial dealings by  the terrorists having been processed through British banks.
