                                                    the role which Britain has already played in the battle against international terrorism which has escalated since the events of September 11th. For example, Britain was the first and most   
                                                
                                                    vociferous nation to lend its support to the USA after the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, and the Prime Minister made it clear that not only would Britain   
                                                
                                                    be heavily involved in the tracking down of international terrorists, including Al-Qaeda, the country would also expect to play a significant part in the overthrow of the Taliban government once   
                                                
                                                    it became clear that bin Laden was directly involved in the attacks on the USA.   
                                                
                                                    As was asserted by a number of British politicians at the time, this was not solely a reaction intended to   
                                                
                                                    demonstrate support for the USA, it was also an acknowledgement that the al-Qaeda network was operating in Europe and that the fight against terrorism was not something which only concerned   
                                                
                                                    the USA and Afghanistan. This perspective was confirmed when terrorist cells were discovered to be active in a number of European countries, including Britain, and evidence of financial dealings by   
                                                
                                                    the terrorists having been processed through British banks.
