the jungles and the deserts and fight wars for their country because Uncle Sam says they are adults. They can move away from home and attend our colleges and
universities, and can choose to live on or off campus because the school systems says it is time for them to join the adult community. But they cannot go
into a bar or a restaurant and order a drink because the MLDA, or minimum legal drinking age, says they are still children. Whats wrong with this picture? The
minimum legal drinking age is currently set at age twenty-one in this country. Most college students will not reach the age of twenty-one until they are juniors or seniors
at the university level, or halfway through a four-year higher education plan. They are living in adult situations, given adult responsibilities, and are expected by society to behave in
an adult manner, therefore I believe they should be given the full rights and freedoms allowed all other adults. It is during this time that young adults are forming
their behavioral patterns and learning the rules of society that will govern the rest of their lives. I believe that if the minimum legal drinking age were lowered to
eighteen, it would encourage these young adults to form a pattern of behavior that includes the sensible and mature use of alcoholic beverages. Opposing Arguments Ninety-nine percent of the arguments
that oppose lowering the minimum legal drinking age are related to the dangers of drinking while driving. Following the end of prohibition in this country, almost all states set
the minimum legal drinking age at twenty-one. Between the years of 1970 and 1975, this age was lowered to eighteen to correspond with new laws that lowered the voting
