Introduction This 1862 novel caused great upset upon its original publication in Russia, but it is still being read today because of the universal insights it gives  into human relationships and the nature of change. We might ask ourselves if the major characters presented are realistic to us, but it is good to remember the age  of the novel, and be aware that was realistic then -and it was certainly considered such at the time -may not seem that way today. If we were to place  this novel within an American historical time frame it would have been published while some were embroiled in the Civil War, and others were carving out homesteads on the "frontier."  Plot As it seems in many historical Russian  novels there is more talking than action.
