    that propels the main character, Betty, forward, and it can be said that it is this constant struggle to make her dreams come true that get her into all of  her trouble, in the end, leaving her changed for life. The play begins on a ferry headed for Nantucket Island. Betty has left New York rather hastily because of  legal problems stemming from a run in with the law. Unknown to her she is being followed by a detective from New York, who has gone undercover hoping to get  a confession out of her about an unsolved murder in which Bettys son, Bert has had some involvement. Interestingly enough, the primary action of Bettys story begins and ends  with New York, called the city of dreams. She and her son, Bert originally come to New York from Bangor, Maine in order to bring Bettys sister, Rosalie back home  with them where she belongs. Instead, through a series of misadventures, both she and Bert show how incapable they are of adapting to city life and in the end, it  is not Rosalie that needs the rescuing, but Betty. She soon becomes sucked up in the citys violence and her dream becomes a nightmare. When her sister, Rosalie is  killed, Betty gets involved in a con game run by a transvestite named Raulito and takes the Rosalies place as a porno queen. Bert, left increasing up to his own  devices, becomes perverted by the city as well. He stoops to luring homosexuals into empty apartments then mugging them. Eventually, this is a game that has a gruesome ending,  and he is killed. The mitigating factor is when Bert is murdered and it looks as if Betty has done it. As with most plays, novels or short stories,
