    the American Dream. This story follows the lives of Lenny and George who learn throughout the course of their journeys that achieving the American Dream is impossible. It  is simply an elusive fantasy which will never be realized. Both Lenny and George want for the things most men want - a place of their own, to  be their own boss, to take orders from no one, and to reap the rewards of their hard work. This to them represents the American Dream. And yet,  the point of the story is that to try and achieve that dream will make it crumble. It is clear through the actions of the characters in this  book that people often use any means necessary to achieve their goals. Furthermore, we see in this story the behaviors of people who have given up on their dreams  and how that bitterness affects their behavior, attitudes and beliefs. Of Mice and Men - Summary and Background Of Mice  and Men was written by John Steinbeck. John Steinbeck was an avid writer who wrote many classic novels which are still read and studied today and in 1962, he  won the Nobel Prize for Literature (The National Steinbeck Center, 2002). John Steinbeck was very talented at creating stories which  portrayed the lives of average men and women: Steinbecks characters are not the rich men and women of Californias boom days, but are the homeless, the migrant workers, the  poor fishermen, and the farmers. However, each of these people has a deceptively simple, but important story to tell, a story filled with love and pain. The stories tell us
