    generally restrain their natural state of behavior until they know the people and know how best to act in the given environment. We, as human beings, behave differently around different  people all the time. Most of us act differently around our parents than we do around our closest friends. It is a generally agreed upon sociological fact that we adjust  ourselves to various environments. For the most part this is simple and done without any thought for we are normally within a culture where we understand what is expected of  us, and in a culture that, overall, accepts us. But, when we find ourselves in a land, a culture, whose history and entire environment is different from our own we  often experience what is known as culture shock. We feel completely alienated and lost. And, just as we do in our own culture, our own society, we understand that we  must make some adjustments and adapt to some extent. In the following paper we examine what adjustments and adaptations would be necessary for living in Kenya. The paper proposes that  an individual has lived in Kenya for two years and is recounting what was necessary for adjustment and adaptation. In the Beginning Let us imagine that the following  is the scenario: "We arrived in Nairobi last night after a grueling 21 hour flight. There are 14 students in the program, 13 from Wash U and 1 graduate student  from BU, whose Swahili professor is an old schoolmate of Mwalimus" (Anonymous Our Kenyan Journals, 2000; news1.html). This individual states, "I have to keep reminding myself that I am IN  KENYA....Im still in a state of euphoric shock, if thats possible" (Anonymous Our Kenyan Journals, 2000; news1.html). The entire notion of being in such a grand and exotic place
