    and colored, deep windows. Ronchamps temperate, rural and mountainous surroundings were perfect for such an exquisite example of Expressionist Modern architecture (Notre Dame du Haut). The manner by  which Le Corbusier achieved unity and coherence in his Notre Dame du Haut was to manipulate the visual elements of line, color, shape, form and scale. Relative to this  composition is his use of curving lines, natural color and complementary shapes that blend in with the surroundings. Indeed, the architects ultimate goal was always to merge with the  aesthetic world rather than adversely contradict it. The visual of extensive concrete is instrumental in establishing a pattern that is repeated in a predictable manner all around the structure.  Le Corbusiers use of such materials helped to create a sense of rhythm that one could readily associate with the cadence of a flowing melody. "Surrealism is a  key to other late works of Le Corbusier, most notably the church at Ronchamp, France, of 1950-54...Notre-Dame-du-Haut was a more extreme statement of Le Corbusiers late style. Progamatically,...the church  is simple-an oblong nave, two side entrances, an axial main altar, and three chapels beneath towers-as is its structure, with rough masonry walls faced with whitewashed Gunite (sprayed concrete) and  a roof of contrasting beton brut. Formally and symbolically, however, this small building, which is sited atop a hillside with access from the south, is immensely powerful and complex"  (Trachtenberg et al 542-4). Since Le Corbusier endeavored to achieve flow and continuity in his structures, Notre Dame du Haut represents the  epitome of this effort. The contrast that is typically created by variations of theme, sudden change or gradual transition are especially noted in the simplistic structural form that readily
